How to become a registered dietitian
To become a registered dietitian you complete an ACEND-accredited education and supervised-practice pathway, you meet CDR’s degree rule, and you pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians.
RD and RDN are Commission on Dietetic Registration credentials. State licensure is a separate step in the states that require it. CSSD is a later sports dietetics specialty for people who are already registered. It is not the entry exam.
MasteryEngine prepares candidates. We do not credential you, and we do not decide that your hours count. CDR does.
Step one: the ACEND pathway
CDR currently requires three things before the exam:
- A graduate degree from a USDE-recognized accredited institution or the equivalent, for anyone first establishing eligibility on or after January 1, 2024
- ACEND-accredited nutrition coursework: a DPD, Coordinated Program, or Graduate Program
- ACEND-accredited supervised practice: a Dietetic Internship, ISPP, Coordinated Program, or Graduate Program
Those ingredients can be sequenced (DPD then internship) or integrated (CP or GP). Foreign degrees and named reciprocity routes have their own instructions on CDR’s eligibility page.
A nutrition job title without that pathway does not make you exam-eligible.
Step two: CDR validates you, then you sit
After the pathway is complete, CDR validates eligibility. Pearson then emails scheduling information. The exam is year-round at Pearson centers. Read the RD Handbook for Candidates before you book.
Passing the exam, with the eligibility requirements complete, is how CDR grants the RD and RDN credential. Confirm current fee, format, and attempt rules on cdrnet.org/rdexamoverview. Candidates who establish eligibility on or after January 1, 2027 face a lifetime limit of eight attempts.
Step three: license where the state requires it
The RD credential is national. Practice rights are often state-level. We do not list state boards here. They change. Look up the state you will work in after you have a CDR status you can actually use.
What the letters change, and what they do not
RD tells an employer and the public that you met CDR’s entry standard. It does not replace a state license. It does not make you a CSSD. It does not create a job.
If your goal is sports dietetics specialty recognition, that is a later CDR path with its own hours and exam. Our CSSD sports dietetics hub is the live program for that exam. Do not sit CSSD instead of the RD exam.
How to prepare without waiting for the last internship week
You can learn the test specifications while supervised practice is still running. You cannot skip the practice.
CDR owns the outline. Start at cdrnet.org/study.
MasteryEngine’s RD bank is not live. There is no RD Free Readiness Check. Grade yourself against each specification domain on accuracy and speed. We do not guarantee a pass and we do not tell CDR you are eligible.
Common questions
How long does it take to become an RD?
Long enough to finish an ACEND pathway and, for first-time eligibility on or after January 1, 2024, a graduate degree, then the exam. CDR does not publish a median calendar.
Can I call myself a dietitian after the internship and before the exam?
Credential use is a CDR and state matter. Do not borrow a title the board has not granted. Read CDR’s credential-use rules.
Is a weekend sports-nutrition certificate the same as RD?
No. RD is CDR’s entry credential. A course certificate is a course.
What to do next
If the pathway is already real, open the specifications and the public guide.
The RD exam prep hub collects the official sources and says the bank is not live. The study guide is the checklist.
MasteryEngine is independent exam prep. We are not affiliated with CDR or the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. RD and RDN are CDR marks. We do not provide CDR continuing-education credit and we do not guarantee eligibility or a pass. Confirm official facts on cdrnet.org.
