RD exam eligibility: degree, ACEND coursework, and supervised practice
To sit the Registration Examination for Dietitians, CDR currently requires a graduate degree from a USDE-recognized accredited institution or the equivalent, ACEND-accredited nutrition coursework, and ACEND-accredited supervised practice.
That is CDR’s rule, not ours. MasteryEngine cannot waive a requirement, validate your verification statement, or promise that you qualify. Confirm every line on CDR’s RD eligibility page before you treat studying as the next honest step.
This page is for the CDR registered dietitian exam. It is not the CSSD sports dietetics specialty credential.
The three gates people actually miss
The graduate-degree floor is dated. Anyone first establishing eligibility on or after January 1, 2024 needs the graduate degree. Candidates who established eligibility by December 31, 2023 are not required by CDR to obtain one. Do not borrow a classmate’s rule.
Coursework has to be ACEND-accredited. A nutrition master’s that is not a DPD, Coordinated Program, or Graduate Program does not automatically count. CDR’s current page names those coursework routes explicitly.
Supervised practice has to be ACEND-accredited too. Dietetic Internship, ISPP, Coordinated Program, or Graduate Program. Hours you arranged yourself do not become a DI because they were long.
The pathways CDR currently lists
CDR’s eligibility page groups the same three ingredients into routes:
- DPD plus Dietetic Internship, with the graduate degree
- Coordinated Program, with coursework and supervised practice integrated
- Graduate Program, same integration
- Doctorate ISPP, for a doctorate from a USDE-recognized institution plus that ISPP
Foreign degrees, Canadian RDs, and named reciprocity routes have their own instructions on the same page. Those are board paths. We do not counsel them.
After CDR validates you
Eligible candidates receive scheduling information from Pearson, CDR’s testing vendor. The RD exam overview says the exam is administered year-round at more than 250 Pearson centers. The current handbook describes a one-year authorization window. Confirm both in the live RD Handbook for Candidates.
In May 2026, CDR’s board set a lifetime limit of eight attempts for candidates who establish eligibility on or after January 1, 2027. If that date is in your future, read the overview again before you treat retakes as unlimited.
Where prep starts after the paperwork is real
Eligibility is the board’s job. Readiness is yours.

Common questions
Do I need a master’s to sit the RD exam?
If you first establish eligibility on or after January 1, 2024, CDR currently requires a graduate degree from a USDE-recognized accredited institution or the equivalent. Confirm your own date on cdrnet.org.
Can MasteryEngine review my verification statement?
No. Send eligibility questions to CDR. We prepare people for exams. We do not sit on the registration panel.
Can I start studying before my internship ends?
You can learn the specifications while the hours accumulate. You cannot skip the hours. Just do not confuse studying with qualifying.
