CSSD exam format: questions, time, cost, and scheduling

The CSSD sports dietetics exam is a computer-based Commission on Dietetic Registration specialist exam. CDR’s current specialist handbook describes 150 multiple-choice questions, 125 of them scored and 25 of them pretest items, in a 3-hour window. The published examination fee is $350, paid when you schedule.

Confirm every figure on CDR’s CSSD examination dates and fee page and in the current candidate handbook before you budget or book. This page is for registered dietitians seeking Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics status. It is not hospital sterile processing.

What the sitting actually looks like

You choose the best answer from four options. The pretest items are mixed in. You cannot tell them apart, so skipping a block because it “feels like a trial question” is a way to donate points.

CDR currently administers the exam year-round through its testing vendor. After eligibility is approved, candidates receive an authorization to test and then schedule. The specialist handbook describes a one-year authorization window. If you do not sit inside that window, you complete the eligibility application again for a new one.

Appointments are made on the vendor side. CDR’s current dates page says to apply from your MyCDR account under Specialist Certifications, then pay the $350 fee when you schedule. We are not the scheduler.

What the fee covers, and what it does not

The $350 figure is the specialist examination fee CDR publishes for this exam. It is due at appointment registration, not at the moment you submit the eligibility application.

It does not include:

  • Your time to document 2,000 sports dietetics hours (or 1,500 if you are recertifying)
  • Any extra vendor fees if you reschedule late or miss a sitting
  • Prep materials, including ours

If you fail, CDR currently requires a 60-day wait before another attempt, and another examination fee. A new eligibility application is not required if you are still inside the one-year authorization. Confirm that path with CDR if you need it. We do not reauthorize anyone.

What “format” should change in your prep

A 3-hour, 150-item specialist exam punishes two habits that work in clinic:

  • Knowing the right plan after a long pause
  • Being excellent in one sport and thin everywhere else

Mastery is accuracy + velocity. A correct answer delivered slowly still shows as a gap once the clock is real.

That is why a random 20-question quiz is a weak rehearsal. It can return a score without telling you which blueprint domain produced the misses, and it rarely measures hesitation.

The Free Readiness Check is built for the starting measurement: about 15 minutes, no credit card, a readiness band, and your weakest domain. That is the first move. Full mock exams, when you want them, are Elite.

What to bring, and what we will not pretend to proctor

CDR and the vendor set identification, arrival, and accommodation rules. Those belong in the current handbook, not in a prep article that will go stale. Read the authorization email and the handbook the week you sit.

We also will not reprint the Sports Dietetics Content Outline. Domain weights change when CDR updates the job analysis. Use the file on CDR’s sports dietetics certification page.

Common questions

How many questions are on the CSSD exam?

CDR’s current specialist handbook says 150 multiple-choice questions: 125 scored and 25 pretest. Confirm the live handbook if you are reading this after another revision.

How long is the CSSD exam?

Three hours, per that same handbook. Plan endurance, not only recall.

When is the CSSD exam offered?

CDR currently says the CSSD examination is administered year-round. Older materials that mention only February and July windows are out of date. Use the current dates page.

How much does the CSSD exam cost?

CDR currently publishes a $350 examination fee, due when you schedule with the testing vendor. Look for any separate application or reschedule fees on cdrnet.org. We do not collect CDR’s fee.
