BOC exam eligibility: CAATE programs and program-director confirmation
To sit the BOC athletic training exam, you must be enrolled in or have completed a CAATE-accredited athletic training education program, and the program director recognized by CAATE must confirm you on the application. Final-semester students can sit. International Arrangement paths are a separate published route.
That is BOC’s rule, not ours. MasteryEngine cannot waive a requirement, confirm your director, or promise that you qualify. Confirm every line in the current BOC Exam Candidate Handbook before you treat studying as the next honest step.
This page is for the Athletic Trainer Certified pathway. It is not the CDR sports dietetics exam.
The gates people actually miss
CAATE is the education gate. A related degree that is not a CAATE-accredited athletic training program does not automatically count. Internship eligibility ended years ago. Do not borrow a rule from someone who sat under a retired pathway.
Your program director has to act. BOC’s current candidate process has the director review Step 1 of the application. If that confirmation never arrives, you are not eligible no matter how ready you feel.
Final semester is enough to sit, not enough to finish the file. BOC lets enrolled final-semester candidates test. Certification still requires a complete file after you pass, including items BOC lists such as an official transcript and current Emergency Cardiac Care documentation. Passing the exam while “Certification Eligible” is not permission to use ATC.
How the current application sequence works
BOC’s candidate pages describe a profile, an application (AT102) with director review, registration and exam-fee payment by a deadline, then scheduling with Meazure Learning after the registration date. Applications and payments have 5 p.m. CT deadlines. Late is the next window.
Candidates currently have a limited time after application approval to register and sit. Confirm the live handbook for the exact clock. We do not reauthorize anyone.
International Arrangement candidates (ARTI, CATA, and other published partners) follow the routes BOC names. Those are board paths.
After you pass, the file still has to close
BOC says candidates who pass may see “Certified” or “Certification Eligible” in their profile. If the status is Certification Eligible, BOC forbids use of the ATC credential until the file is complete and BOC has granted certification.
That is why eligibility is not only “can I get a seat.” It is also “can I finish the file.”
Where prep starts after the paperwork is real
Eligibility is the board’s job. Readiness is yours.
MasteryEngine’s athletic training bank is not live. There is no AT Free Readiness Check. Grade yourself against the current Practice Analysis until there is.
The BOC athletic training exam prep hub keeps those official links in one place and says the bank is not live.
Common questions
Can I sit before I graduate?
BOC currently allows candidates enrolled in their final semester or quarter to sit, with program-director confirmation that the degree is earned or will be earned. Confirm the live handbook.
Can MasteryEngine talk to my program director?
No. Send eligibility questions to BOC and to your director. We prepare people for exams. We do not sit on the credentialing desk.
Do I need NATA membership to be eligible?
NATA membership changes the application-fee line BOC publishes. It is not the same thing as CAATE completion. Read the current fee table on bocatc.org.
