How hard is the BOC athletic training exam?
The BOC athletic training exam is the Board of Certification examination that, after you meet the eligibility rules, leads to the Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC) credential. It is hard because it is a four-hour, 175-item sitting that mixes stand-alone items and focused testlets across five practice domains, not because a single percentage tells your story.
MasteryEngine does not publish a house pass rate and we do not predict your BOC result. BOC already posts exam-year reports. Read those as history, not as your odds.
This page is for BOC athletic training candidates. It is not the CDR sports dietetics exam, and it is not a hospital sterile-processing role.
What BOC’s exam reports actually show
BOC’s public About page and annual exam reports list first-time pass rates by exam year.
For 2024 through 2025, BOC reported 2,256 first-time testers and a 74.6 percent first-time pass rate. For 2025 through 2026, the same page listed 2,397 first-time testers and a 68.4 percent first-time pass rate.
The 2024 through 2025 annual report also printed a 29.3 percent pass rate on retake administrations that year. First-time and retake are different populations. Do not average them into one “the BOC pass rate.”
None of that is a forecast for you. Confirm the current report on bocatc.org before you quote a figure.
Why the exam still feels hard when many first-timers pass
The BOC exam is an entry credential for athletic trainers, but it is not a recap of one lab. BOC builds the exam from the current Practice Analysis. The candidate pages name five domains: Risk Reduction, Wellness and Health Literacy; Assessment, Evaluation and Diagnosis; Critical Incident Management; Therapeutic Intervention; and Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility.
The sitting itself is not only multiple choice. BOC describes stand-alone items (multiple choice, multi-select, drag-and-drop, hot spot) plus focused testlets built on a scenario. You have four hours. Results post weeks after the window closes, not at the desk.
People who call it easy usually had recent, broad clinical experience and were already fluent in the item types. People who call it hard often had a domain they had not practiced, plus formats they had never clicked through.
What “hard” should change in your plan
Treat difficulty as remaining gaps against the current Practice Analysis, not as a personality trait.
BOC owns that analysis, the Candidate Handbook, eligibility, fees, and windows. Start at bocatc.org. We do not copy the blueprint here.
MasteryEngine’s athletic training question bank is not live. There is no AT Free Readiness Check today. The live check runs on CSSD sports dietetics. Until an AT bank exists, grade yourself against each Practice Analysis domain on two axes: can you answer correctly, and can you answer quickly, including the interactive item types.
Common questions
Is the BOC exam harder than the RD exam?
They are different professions and different boards. Do not study one as a substitute for the other.
What score do I need?
BOC reports scores on a 200 to 800 scale. The published passing standard is 500. That is a criterion-referenced scaled score, not a percentage of 175.
Does a 70-ish first-time rate mean I should delay?
A year-level percentage is an average over people who already met BOC’s eligibility rules. It does not map your unread domains. Delay only if the unread list is still long.
What to do next
Use the official Practice Analysis, then keep this site’s public guide next to it.
The BOC athletic training exam prep guide collects the BOC sources and says plainly that the AT bank is not live. The study guide is the place to turn the Practice Analysis into a checklist.
If you want to see a live Free Readiness Check today, that product runs on CSSD sports dietetics, a different exam.
