How to become a certified athletic trainer
To become a certified athletic trainer you complete a CAATE-accredited athletic training education program, you pass the Board of Certification examination, and you finish the BOC file so the ATC credential is actually granted.
ATC is a BOC credential. State licensure is a separate step in the states that regulate athletic trainers. NATA membership is not the credential. The CDR sports dietetics exam is a different profession.
MasteryEngine prepares candidates. We do not credential you, and we do not confirm your program director. BOC does.
Step one: the CAATE program
BOC currently requires completion of an entry-level athletic training education program accredited by CAATE, or a published International Arrangement path. Final-semester students may sit if the recognized program director confirms the degree is earned or will be earned.
A related exercise-science degree without that accreditation does not automatically count. Internship eligibility ended in 2004. Do not plan from a retired route.
Find accredited programs on CAATE’s site, then stay inside the program that will actually confirm you.
Step two: apply, sit, then close the file
Create a BOC profile. Complete the application so your program director can confirm you. Pay the published application fee and, after approval, the exam fee by the window deadline. Schedule with Meazure Learning when that email arrives.
The exam is 175 items in four hours. Passing the scaled standard of 500 is necessary and not always sufficient. BOC may show “Certification Eligible” until the file is complete. BOC forbids use of ATC in that state. The current candidate pages name an official transcript and current Emergency Cardiac Care documentation among the close-out items. Confirm the live list.
Step three: license where the state requires it
ATC is the national certification. Practice rights are often state-level. We do not list state boards here. They change. Look up the state you will work in after you have a BOC status you can actually use.
What the letters change, and what they do not
ATC tells an employer and the public that you met BOC’s entry standard. It does not replace a state license. It does not make you a registered dietitian. It does not create a job.
If you arrived here hunting CSSD sports dietetics, that is a CDR specialty for registered dietitians. Our CSSD hub is the live program for that exam. Do not sit it instead of BOC.

BOC owns the blueprint. Start at bocatc.org and the current Practice Analysis edition.
MasteryEngine’s athletic training bank is not live. There is no AT Free Readiness Check. Grade yourself against each domain on accuracy, speed, and item type. We do not guarantee a pass and we do not tell BOC you are eligible.
Common questions
How long does it take to become an ATC?
Long enough to finish a CAATE professional program (bachelor’s or master’s, on the terms CAATE and your school set) and then the exam and file. BOC does not publish a median calendar.
Can I call myself an athletic trainer after I pass and before the file closes?
If BOC shows Certification Eligible, it says ATC use is prohibited until certification is granted. Read the result letter.
Is NATA certification a different exam?
The certification exam is BOC’s. NATA is a membership organization. Membership can change an application fee. It is not a second credentialing exam.

MasteryEngine is independent exam prep. We are not affiliated with BOC, NATA, or CAATE. ATC and related marks belong to their owners. We do not provide BOC continuing-education credit and we do not guarantee eligibility or a pass. Confirm official facts on bocatc.org.
