How to become a CSSD sports dietitian
To become a CSSD sports dietitian you first become a registered dietitian, then you document specialty practice hours, then you pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration sports dietetics examination.
CSSD means Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. It is an RD credential, not a hospital Central Sterile Services Department, and not a substitute for the RD itself.
MasteryEngine prepares candidates for the exam. We do not hire you, credential you, or decide that your hours count. CDR does.
Step one: earn and keep the RD
There is no CSSD without current RD status with CDR. If you are still in a dietetics program, your next exam is the Registration Examination for Dietitians, not this one.
We publish a public RD guide at masteryengine.io/exams/rd/. That bank is not live. The live learner program today is CSSD sports dietetics. Use CDR for official RD rules.
You also need to hold RD status for a minimum of two years from your original examination date before the specialty exam. Fresh credentials and a job with a team do not compress that clock.
Step two: do the sports dietetics hours
For initial certification, CDR currently requires 2,000 hours of sports dietetics practice as an RD within the past five years. Recertification uses 1,500 hours in the same window.
CDR’s practice definition is specific: individual and group or team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of competitive and recreational athletes, including the education, management, or research work linked to that specialty. A general outpatient caseload is not automatically sports dietetics.
Some graduate degrees and professional activities can substitute for part of those hours, up to 500 hours, on the terms CDR publishes. The live list is on CDR’s CSSD eligibility page.
Track hours the way you would track anything you may have to defend: dates, setting, duties, and a verifier. Future hours you have not worked yet do not count.
Step three: apply, then sit the specialty exam
Apply from your MyCDR account under Specialist Certification. CDR currently administers the CSSD examination year-round. The published examination fee is $350, paid when you schedule with the testing vendor.
The current specialist handbook describes a computer-based exam of 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, with a one-year authorization window after you are approved. Confirm the live handbook and the dates and fee page.
Passing grants the specialty credential for a five-year cycle. Recertification is a separate CDR process: hours, an application, and either the exam or any alternate path CDR is piloting for a defined window. Do not plan recertification from a prep article. Use cdrnet.org.
What the letters change, and what they do not
CSSD tells an employer, a coach, or an athlete that an RD has documented specialty practice and passed CDR’s sports dietetics examination. It does not replace a state license. It does not make you an athletic trainer. It does not create a job.
If you want the athletic training credential, that is a BOC path. Our athletic training guide is public. That bank is not live.
How to prepare without waiting for the last hour
You can learn the outline while the hours accumulate. You cannot skip the hours.
CDR owns the Sports Dietetics Content Outline and the reference list. Start there: board certification in sports dietetics.
When you want a measurement that is not a random quiz, the Free Readiness Check takes about 15 minutes, asks for no credit card, and returns a readiness band plus your weakest domain. Ten daily readiness questions keep that picture current. Sprint is the later upgrade if you want the full remaining-gap map, including domains you have not opened.
We do not guarantee a pass and we do not tell CDR you are eligible.
Common questions
How long does it take to become a CSSD?
At minimum, two years of RD status plus 2,000 documented specialty hours inside a five-year window, then the exam. Many people take longer because the hours are part-time or the unread blueprint is large. CDR does not publish a median.
Can I become a sports dietitian without the CSSD?
You can practice sports nutrition as an RD without the specialty credential where your license and job allow it. CSSD is the board specialty recognition, not the only legal way to talk to an athlete. Employers and teams often treat the letters as the proof.
Is CSSD the same as a sports nutrition certificate from a course vendor?
No. CSSD is CDR’s specialty certification. A weekend certificate is a course. Do not let the acronyms blur.
